What is Lumbar Support and why does it matter? You do not need to go far in the world of Ergonomic Office Chairs before you are confronted by repeated references to various types of Lumbar Support.

The lumbar region simply relates to the lower back region and it is often an area which people suffer pain in. It is therefore little surprise to see that ergonomic design has sought to do what it can to address this area.

There are three main categories for lumbar support that you will come across: Fixed Lumbar Support, Adjustable Lumbar Support and Dynamic Lumbar Support.

In relation to fixed lumbar support, as the name suggests the support is fixed and therefore there is no way for the user to adjust it if it does not suit your body.

Due to the draw-backs of fixed supports, the amount of ergonomic office chairs offering some kind of adjustable lumbar support has risen dramatically over recent years. There are two main adjustments that you should be looking for. The first is a height adjustment. A height adjustment might be able to be achieved through adjusting the whole backrest up or down, however this is somewhat of a crude adjustment. It is therefore more advantageous if the lumber support can be adjusted independently of the backrest.

Finally, there are what are known as dynamic lumbar support which one tends to find at the more sophisticated end of the market where the support responds dynamically to the body depending on its position with the aim of providing constant support.
