What are 5D Armrests?

Updated: Mar 21

2D, 3D, 4D and now 5D Armrests on an office chair. So just what exactly are 5D armrests?

It seems when it comes to ergonomic office chairs there is no end to jargon. However, the first point to remember is that the “D” simply refers to the number of dimensions which the armrests can be adjusted in.

So working through those dimensions you have:

1D Height adjustment

2D Forward/backward

2D Left/Right

4D Rotation on the axis

4D armrests are therefore most commonly understood to provide for the adjustments that can me seen in the image below.

So we can all get to 4D pretty comfortably, but what therefore is the mythical 5D.

Well the most common configuration of a 5D armrest is an adaption on the 4D "rotation on the axis", such that the armrest itself can rotate away from its base to give a second rotation, to give still further possible positions.

One of the best examples of the 5D armrest configuration is the brilliant Hinomi ergonomic office chair.

It does take a bit of fiddling around to get used to 5D armrests like this, but once you do it is difficult to move back to a 4D armrest. So the 5D is hear to stay and it is fair to say it is a thing of beauty!
