Steelcase Series 1 Office Chair

Updated: Jun 30, 2022

The Steelcase Series 1 delivers on every level. If you are after a chair which is lightweight and compact then this chair is your super-star performer.

There is plenty of jargon that comes with the Series 1: It has LiveBack technology, adaptive bolstering and 4D adjustable arms. However, breaking that down it essentially means that Steelcase has backed a huge amount of adjustability and performance into the Series 1.

The height adjustment mechanism will allow you to position the seat so that you have just the right level of comfort, and height relative to your work station. The seat pan also adjusts for depth so that whether you are tall or short you can get the right performance. The Armrest is 4D, which means that in addition to the height adjustment, the armrests also adjust forward/back, side-to-side and also rotate.

When it comes to back tension and recline the Series 1 has three easily selectable positions. The first position allows “regular” weight activated and reclining. The second position provides the same functionality but with a “tension boost” to provide more resistance when you recline. Finally, the third position is one where the backrest is “locked” in the upright position such that there is no weight activated recline. The lumber support has a vertical height adjustment.

In terms of the key dimensions the Series 1 has the following:

Height (without seat impact absorber) 390-510mm Height (with seat impact absorber) 415-520mm Seat depth 460mm Functional seat depth 400-470mm Seat width 475mm Back height from seat 495mm Width between arms 460mm Arm height from seat 200-300mm Arm cap pivot range 40°/-40°
